60年代Young作为一介浪人漂泊江湖，在许多知名乐队组合中留下了足迹和杰出作品。CSN&Y的《Deja Vu》大获成功君临全美冠军宝座时，专辑中由Young演绎的《Helpless》亦以其颓废无助的伤感氛围一跃成为家喻户晓的名曲。此后Young的创作才华与不羁的外表一起逐渐受到世人瞩目，终于1970年Young以一张《After the Gold Rush》开始了个人的辉煌。
虽然这已经是Young个人的第三张专辑，但是这次显然与以往有所不同。封套上的他留着长发，身着长风衣洒脱地与一位老妇人擦肩而过，此刻动与静融为一体，形成摇滚史上最为经典的瞬间之一——Neil Young告别过去一成不变的固有模式，开始了崭新的尝试。
唱片的制作得到众多曾经合作过的乐队与音乐人的鼎力支持，从根本上保证了录制水准。唱片中Neil Young一改往日以乐队为中心的风格，力求于简约之中体现歌曲的力度。这样的尝试十分奏效，《After the Gold Rush》，《Birds 》等曲目的伴奏仅仅是一台钢琴，却令听者于凄凉宁静中体会到深藏于Young内心的悸动。《Don't Let It Bring You Down》也以其简洁的伴奏，独特的美感打动着每一个人--Young借这首歌抒发了他于孤清的伦敦街头的所感。《Only Love Can Break Your Heart》是专辑中第一首热门单曲，这首歌是Young写来送给CSN&Y的老友Graham Nash的。《Southern Man 》则以电子摇滚的曲风显示了Young激越的另一面。
专辑中除了《Oh, Lonesome Me》一曲之外都由Neil Young本人创作，充分体现了Young作为词曲作者的才能，Young也以本作初步奠定了自己作为个人演唱者在摇滚乐界的地位。
